The Atkins Diet is based on managing your intake of carbs that would lead to weight loss. It is a 4 phase weight loss approach.
- Phase 1 of Atkins Diet is the Induction which lasts for 14 days to kick-starts your body into lipolysis/ketosis, switching your metabolism to one that primarily burns fat for energy. It is the strictest phase of Atkins Diet, where only pure proteins are allowed, like meat, fish, poultry, and eggs, and pure fats such as olive oil, butter, and mayonnaise. A very limited amount of carbs is permitted.
Only 20 grams of carbohydrates per day are allowed during this period, via vegetables such as broccoli, salad, and asparagus. No bread, grains, starchy vegetables or fruit should be eaten during this phase.
- Phase 2 of Atkins Diet is the Ongoing Weight Loss that lets you personalize the Atkins Diet to your tastes and needs. You learned how to increase your carb intake in increments of 5 grams.
- Phase 3 of Atkins Diet is to established your Atkins Carbohydrate Equilibrium (ACE). This phase allows you to increase your daily carb count by 10 grams each week until you are no longer losing weight. When you have it you ideal weight, stay at that level for about a month before you increase your daily carb consumption by another 10 grams without gaining weight. Once weight is gained, drop back 10 grams and you should have established your ACE.
- Phase 4 of Atkins Diet is to move into Lifetime Maintenance. To enjoy long-term success, you need to have the strength of conviction. The determination to succeed is your responsibility.
