Salmon Omega-3 Oil
Fatty Acids
Essential fatty acids (EFA) are vital nutritional components that our bodies need for many functions. Sometimes referred to as Vitamin F, EFAs cannot be made by the body - they must be supplied in the diet. They are found in the seeds of plants and in the oils of cold-water fish. Many factors, including stress, allergies, disease, and a diet high in fried foods can increase the body's nutritional need for essential fatty acids. (excerpt from EFA infonnation, Woodland Publishing).
Salmon Oil is rich in Omega-3 essential fatty acids. These nutrients are recognized as having many beneficial properties. They include regulating the body's production of cholesterol, strengthening cell walls and fortifying them against the invasion of virus- es and bacteria.
Recent studies show that Omega-3 fatty acids offer protection against heart disease and heart attacks. Omega-3 make the platelets in the blood less likely to clump together and form clots that lead to heart attacks. Omega-3 can reduce triglycerides (blood fats related to cholesterol) and may lower blood pressure. Omega-3 also inhibits inflammation, which is a factor in plaque build-up. As a result, fish oil is an effective way to prevent blockage of arteries.
Omega-3 is synthesised in the body into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) which has vasodilatory properties on blood vessels and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which has been associated with optimal nerve and brain development. Fish oils contains large amounts of both EPA and DHA. As such, higher intakes of Omega-3 oils can benefit in terms of reduced heart disease, hypertension and a wide vari- ety of inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis.
Pregnant and lactating women should consume at least 300mg of DHA daily. During the last trimester of pregnancy, the placenta depletes the mother's store of DHA and passes them to the foetus. Breast feeding continue to significantly reduce the mother's DHA levels. A diet deficient in DHA may have detrimental health effects on the baby's brain development. Boosting both mother's and baby's DHA levels during pregnancy and breast feeding can assist normal brain and retina development in infants.
The most common supplemental source of Omega-3 is fish oil. The highest quality fish oil supplement should provide at least 18% EPA and 12% DHA, the higher the EPA/DHA content, the better (but also more expensive).
